Sintered workpieces are much harder and denser than green ones and must be machined with diamond grinding tools. A mill cuts a thin layer of the material and repeats its steps making a number of passes until the desired depth is reached. Milling machines are used to horizontally or vertically to machine many materials.

Instead of using traditional grinders the shop often uses standard cnc milling machines and machining centers for these grinding operations. The spindle is the heart of any milling machine. For many jobs in the 45 to 65 rc hardness range in which grinding was historically the process of choice hard turning and hard milling with ceramic insert cutters are finding increasing acceptance in shops. With the help of ceramic high performance materials applications can be realised where metals and plastics due to their thermal resistance and wear meet their limits.
